Malik is from Arkansas.  He is the younger brother of former Arkansas All-SEC wide receiver Marcus Monk.  Monk described himself as a Country Boy, When not playing basketball, Monk’s favorite activities as a youngster included fishing and riding four wheelers.  He was a crowd favorite at the University of Kentucky.

Malik was a one and done player at the Kentucky who averaged nearly 20 points a game.

Most BBN will remember December 17, 2016.  This is the night Monk set a University of Kentucky freshman scoring record dropping 47 points in a win over the University of North Carolina.

A couple of weeks later Malik scored 34 points hitting 5 for 7 three point goals in a 99–76 win over Ole Miss.   On January 31, 2017 he scored 37 points against Georgia Bulldogs.  When Malik got hot, he was one of the most prolific shooters to ever play at the University of Kentucky.

At the conclusion of his freshman season, to no ones surprise, Monk announced that he would forgo his final three years of collegiate eligibility and enter the 2017 NBA draft where he was projected as a first round selection.

Monk was selected the eleventh overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets
